The origins of the guayabera are to be found in rural Cuba, on the banks of the river Yayaba. Debate is still at large whether the given name is due to the river, or to the Guayaba, a tropical fruit that is found in the same area. The tropical shirt soon became appreciated by dandies as well as revolutionaries. Its practical and aesthetic success aided its popularity to the rest of the neighboring Caribbean countries, from Mexico to Miami in USA, or Cartagena in Colombia. Nowadays, it is accepted as formal wear hence it can be worn in black-tie dress code events.
