The kaftan is a derivation of the ancient tunic, a simple piece of cloth worn from head to toe by both men and women. While in Europe fashion began exploring lengths and shapes, the kaftan remained as the basic garment in Middle East, where each tribe would adapt a different collar to identify the wearer’s origins - the Baruc collar is similar in height to those of Saudi Arabia. The kaftan maintains the length and shape of traditional kaftans adjusted to European standards.
The kaftan, or caftan, has been worn by a number of cultures around the world for thousands of years. Caftans were worn by both men and women, especially scholars and high-ranking officials who were part of the urban elite. With time, caftan styles have developed narrower sleeves, much like European clothing, and has become a popular garment all over the world.
